René Visagie & Associates: A Legacy of Sound Lives On

The name René Visagie & Associates holds a special place in the hearts of many in
Somerset West and beyond. As the founder of one of the area’s first audiology practices in
1990, her work profoundly shaped the field of hearing care across the Boland region. For
many families, the name may bring memories of a loved one receiving their first hearing
aids, much needed Speech Therapy for their toddler or a new born baby undergoing a vital
hearing screening. Over the decades, René Visagie & Associates has become a
cornerstone of compassionate, expert care.

In January this year, René Visagie passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. She
was more than a highly respected audiologist—she was a beloved leader, mentor,
colleague, and friend. Her warmth, laughter, and steadfast dedication to her patients and
team are qualities that will be remembered always.

René’s legacy lives on in the strong foundation she built. Her practice continues to thrive,
guided by the principles and standards she championed throughout her career. At the heart
of this ongoing journey is Elmarie Thorpe, who worked alongside René for over 20 years. In
recent years, René had begun transitioning the leadership of the practice to Elmarie Thorpe
ensuring continuity and care beyond her own tenure.

Elmarie brings not only decades of experience in audiology but also a specialised focus in
vestibular and balance assessments. Having worked closely with René, she is uniquely
equipped to lead the practice into its next chapter while honouring its founding values.

The René Visagie & Associates group, with practices in Somerset West, Strand, Paarl, and
Hermanus, remains fully committed to providing the same high level of service patients have
come to expect. While a name change is forthcoming due to regulatory requirements,
patients can rest assured that the familiar faces, expertise, and heartfelt care remain
unchanged.

The René Visagie legacy will continue but gradually transition to the new banner of
Elmarie Thorpe Audiology but with the same unwavering commitment to excellence in
hearing care. The sound of her legacy will echo in every patient helped, every life improved,
and every moment made clearer—just as René would have wanted.
